Carona attorneys say Feds have no jurisdiction

By Jason Siegel

ADVERTISEMENTS

Attorneys for former Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona asked a judge to dismiss four of the corruption charges against him, claiming federal prosecutors don't have jurisdiction in the case.

They claim the U.S. Attorney shouldn't be allowed to prosecute him because California's Fair Political Practices Commission regulates gifts accepted by elected officials, the Los Angeles Times report.

If U.S. District Judge Andrew J. Guilford dismisses the one count of conspiracy and three counts of mail fraud, Carona still faces two witness-tampering charges.

Also, transcripts of the secretly recorded conversations between Carona and former assistant sheriff Don Haidl were released last week.
