: ThePopTortSupreme Court Says Coal Company Donation Should Disqualify West Virginia Judge
By Andy Hoffman
Don Blankenship, the CEO of Massey Coal, ?tort reformer? and one rich dude, thought he could buy his way to justice in West Virginia. But he?s been failing lately ? big time.
First, he tried to buy the 2006 mid-term elections. He lost most of them.
Now, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that Blankenship and Massey?s $3 million expenditure to get West Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent D. Benjamin elected, means the judge should never have participated in a case where he voted to reverse a $50 million judgment against Massey.
Corporate money has been stinking up judicial elections for some time now. Let?s hope Supreme Court decisions like this nudge the country in the right direction.
