McDermott Will & Emery Drops the Axe . . . Once Again

By Ashby Jones

ADVERTISEMENTS

spacklerAh, the misery continues. The good folks over at Above the Law are reporting that McDermott Will & Emery has announced another sizeable layoff. Heading home are 72 people; 25 associates and 47 staff members. Back in February, the firm laid off 60 lawyers and 89 staff members.

According to ATL, there was a silver lining, at least for first-years. The firmwide memo states that class of 2008 associates asked to leave will be given an opportunity to work with community service organizations as “public interest fellows.” Those folks will receive a monthly stipend “enabling them to work on a full time basis.”

A spokeswoman for the firm said the firm wasn’t making any external statements on the moves.

In other recent news from McDermott Will (in case you missed it), 15 MWE lawyers in Boston were last month named “Massachusetts Super Lawyers” and “Massachusetts Rising Stars” by Law & Politics.

To paraphrase Carl Spackler (pictured), they’ve got that going for them, which is nice.
