: Legal Pad | LAGovernment center part of unprecedented "safety zone" in gang injunction

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James C. Chalfant granted a new injunction against the Barrio Van Nuys gang, singling out the Van Nuys government center and the Van Nuys High School as part of a "safety zone" needing special protection from gang violence.
Bruce Riordan, director of the anti-gang operations for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, said it is unprecedented to include a government center in a gang injunction. High schools have been included in them in the past.
The injunction, the sixth in the San Fernando Valley, names 35 gang members, though it says there could be as many as 500 who are unknown. Officials said the injunction will keep gang members from associating with one another in public and also provide authorities with greater ability to police a street gang whose criminal activity increased 50 percent last year.
