RULE CHANGES, MANDATORY CLE BEFORE HIGH COURT
"Changes to the court rules and the shape of mandatory continuing legal education took center stage last week at a hearing before the New Jersey Supreme Court. New Jersey State Bar Association officials testified on issues including who should be allowed to mediate, to the wording on criminal plea forms about immigration status to subpoenas in municipal court, to whether lawyers should be allowed to self-report their education credits. The State Bar Association's counsel urged the Court to consider allowing attorneys to self-monitor their continuing legal education credits, rather than see the judiciary establish a costly tracking system."

D.C. CIRCUIT UPHOLDS LANDMARK RICO CASE AGAINST BIG TOBACCO
"A three-judge D.C. Circuit panel on Friday, upholding a trial judge's landmark ruling, found tobacco companies liable in a decades-long conspiracy to deceive consumers about the adverse health effects of smoking, a substantial win for the Justice Department in a closely watched RICO case. The court, however, rejected the government's request to seize billions of dollars in corporate profits from the companies, including Altria Group, Reynolds, and Brown and Williamson, whom the government argued manipulated nicotine to sustain addiction and marketed and promoted low-tar cigarettes as less harmful than 'full flavor' cigarettes."

PENNSYLVANIA INACTIVE STATUS NO LONGER FREE
"Lawyers often decide to go on inactive status if they don't do work in the particular jurisdiction and don't want to pay the annual fees. But in Pennsylvania, inactive lawyers now have to pay $70 a year. 'Noncompliance with this provision will result in the inactive attorney being placed on Administrative Suspension,' lawyers licensed in the Keystone State were told in a recent notice accompanying their annual registration and fee form from the Pennsylvania Unified Judicial System."

PRODUCT AIMS TO HELP LAW FIRMS MAINTAIN WOMEN'S INITIATIVES
"As budgets and jobs continue to be slashed at law firms across the U.S., women advocates fear that women's initiatives could get lost in the shuffle. A training and consulting group called Negotiating Women Inc. is making available, for $14,999, a Powerpoint presentation that's e-mailed to law firms with step-by-step instructions on conducting meetings designed to boost women's roles in the legal profession and help them become partners and rainmakers. The product, endorsed by the National Association of Women Lawyers, comes with tips on how to run six meetings on various topics, such as how to have complicated conversations with clients."

A LOOK AT THE WILENTZ COURT FROM WITHIN: PART 3
"In the third of nine installments of his book, "What Makes a Court Supreme," printed in the New Jersey Law Journal, the late Justice Daniel O'Hern discusses the contributions of Justice Robert Clifford, many of whose majority opinions are of enduring significance, such as one that permitted a property owner to assert a strict-liability action for abnormally dangerous activities against a predecessor in title. Clifford also had a reputation for a precision in the use of language, one of the reasons he was an integral part of the Court."
