: The GavelConservatives, Interest Groups Gear Up for SCotUS Battle
By Jason Barrett
An article in the Sunday New York Times outlines ten memoranda drafted by conservative groups, the contents of which show that the conservative movement is preparing itself to vigorously fight any nominee that President Obama chooses to replace retiring justice David Souter.
Each memorandum outlines a strategy on how to attack a possible nominee, raising issues on same-sex marriage, abortion, and separation of church and state. “While conservatives say they know they have little chance of defeating Mr. Obama?s choice because Democrats control the Senate hey say they hope to mount a fight that could help refill depleted coffers and galvanize a movement demoralized by Republican electoral defeats,? writes Charlie Savage, the article?s author.
The Blog of Legal Times reports that an anti-abortion rights group, Americans United for Life, is also weighing in on the possible nominees. The Blog notes that the “person-by-person assessment reserves its harshest words for Diane Wood, judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. ‘Judge Wood has placed her pro-abortion ideology above her judicial duty,’ the group states, citing rulings she has authored on laws restricting abortions and on the rights of abortion clinic protesters.”
