Pink

Yesterday evening I got off the T in Harvard Square and saw a tall white guy in a button-down shirt, shorts, loafers without socks, and a backwards baseball cap. I rolled my eyes, but whatever. Then I realized he was with three other tall white guys dressed just like him. I walked up to catch my bus, and a string of unbelievably egregious prepsters passed me going the other way. Pink button down shirt, chinos, loafers. Another pink shirt, tan blazer, backwards baseball cap. An iconoclast in a white button down shirt, blue Dockers, and a sideways baseball cap.

I actually thought maybe it was an ironic costume party. It was just too much. This scruffy dude with torn jeans and an earring who was waiting for the light with me couldn't hide his confusion, and turned his head way around to stare back at the sea of pink.

Then I realized they were all wearing the same white cap, which had the Harvard seal on it. Then I realized that the cap had a word embroidered in black on the side: LACROSSE.

Not ironic!

I sometimes meet a client, hear a little of their story, and think, Wow, I have no frame of reference for that. They're just from somewhere too far off. Like Cameroon. Or Nepal. Or Lacrosse.
