The Top Gun With The Top Legal Job - The LA US Attorney

We’re always interested in reading about lawyers with interesting spins on their legal careers, and the newly appointed top US Attorney in LA, Tom O’Brien, is a case in point.  But first a word on the office itself.  The US Attorney, in LA at least, has been less prominent than other legal positions like the District Attorney and the County Sheriff.  But the office itself is the second-largest in the US and O’Brien has been heavily involved in some heavy-duty prosecutions, including indicting the Orange County Sheriff, indictments against ‘home grown’ terrorists planning to blow up various facilities around Southern California and other offences. 

Most of O’Brien’s priorities for the office — terrorism, public corruption, gangs, child exploitation and white-collar crime — trickle down from the Justice Department and mirror those of other U.S. attorney’s offices across the country.
So how did he come to all this?  The LA Times reports that O’Brien, was a former airman with the US Navy, where he wound up entangled with a MIG in his F-14 fighter.  A real Top Gun, who wound up in the same school Tom Cruise portrayed in the movie.
