Hockey Day in Canada

By Michael Fitzgibbon

ADVERTISEMENTS

Saturday, February 9 was Hockey Day in Canada and what a wonderful day it was.  Click on some of the videos to get a flavour of the day.

It began for me at about 5:30 am, as it did, I'm sure, for many parents, getting my son up and dressed for a 7 am practice. The snow was falling and it was "still night" as he reminded me, as we stepped out of the house and made our way to the arena.  I coach his team and the turnout was light allowing us to play a little 3 on 3 which was allot of fun for the kids.  The practice was followed by a trip to the local Tim Horton's and steaming mugs of hot chocolate (Tim Horton's is a generous supporter of minor hockey in Canada, including the league that my son plays in "Tim Bits") and then for a game of "mini sticks" in the basement, where the walls are in need of repair...

The afternoon took me out with a buddy (also from Montreal) to a local establishment to watch a few games.  The Toronto Maple Leaf's beat the Detroit Red Wings in the first game.  And if that wasn't bad enough, and as a Montreal native that was really bad, this was followed by a pummeling of my beloved Montreal Canadiens by the Ottawa Senators.

All in all a fantastic day.  Hockey is undeniably part of the fabric of our country and, as the video's on the CBC site will show, there is much more to learn through involvement in hockey than how to play the game.
