UC San Diego School of Law? Maybe? Possibly? Wait, what are we talking about?

By Steve Pirates

ADVERTISEMENTS

So, for years (read: decades) there have been various discussions, rumors, and proposals about the possibility of the University of California, San Diego opening a law school.  The most common version is that UC San Diego would completely take over California Western School of Law to become “UCSD School of Law”.  Another version of the rumor holds that UCSD would merge with Cal Western to become “California Western School of Law At UC San Diego”.  There are many variations of this rumor which has been around since the 1980s.  At a City Council Meeting, a representative from UCSD seemed to confirm something in that vein, but when questioned by CityBeat for follow up, seemed to backtrack, leaving us squarely back in innuendo land.

So,  read below and form your own opinion, do you read this as semantic waffling, or as a sign that the rumors can finally be put to rest?

In response to a question from San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith this morning at the City Council?s Rules Committee meeting, a representative from UCSD confirmed that there are ongoing ?conversations? with California Western School of Law about some kind of partnership or purchase.

Goldsmith said he?d heard talk that the university was maybe going to buy a law school. That?s when the representative, whose name I haven?t caught (the meeting is ongoing) and was speaking to the committee about the economic benefits of UCSD, mentioned the talks between the two institutions. But she said she couldn?t say anything beyond that.

Update: The representative I mentioned was UCSD Vice Chancellor Debra Neuman, who just told me that, no, there?s no talk of purchase. She was very careful about characterizing the conversations, at first using the words ?partnership? and ?merger? but then backpedaling on ?merger.? We left it at conversations about UCSD and Cal Western ?working together in some way.?
