Update about deadly Iowa ATV accident and the heroics of an 11-year-old girl.

There is a very interesting update in the World-Herald by staff writer Katie Fretland, about the Des Moines Register article I blogged about a few days ago concerning the ATV accident that caused the death of an 11-year-old girl, Courtney Leming. Morgan McFarland was not the driver, was knocked unconscious and when she came too she realized Courtney was seriously injured.

The article states that Courtney Leming was the sixth grade driver that died. The ATV rolled and both girls were thrown. A fence post pierced Courtney's skull.

The girls had been riding the ATV at 6:30 p.m. about a half-mile from the farmhouse when the vehicle crashed. Courtney, who was driving, got too close to a fence and overcorrected the vehicle, said Montgomery County sheriff's investigators.

Young Ms. Morgan's right arm was broken. In the crash she lost her shoes. Undeterred she walked barefoot through cornfields to the farmhouse hoping she could get help in time to save her friend's life.

What a wonderful young lady. She should know that from terrible things good things can come to be. Best of luck to Miss Morgan and contact us if you'd like a place to write about your experience. Here at the InjuryBoard we think even an 11-year-old has something to contribute about wearing helmets and riding on ATV's.

Point being an 11-year-old may be better able to convey the dangers to other 11-year-olds.
