Dobson is Lying

By Ed Brayton

ADVERTISEMENTS

James Dobson is saying that if McCain is the Republican nominee, he'll sit out the election. He's lying. More specifically, he's pretending that he'll sit out the election in order to gain maximum leverage in cutting a deal with McCain in exchange for his support. This is phase two of the strategy that the religious right leader began in Salt Lake City several months ago when they announced the same thing about Giuliani, who was then thought to be the front runner for the nomination.

This is all just political gamesmanship. Ultimately, there will be a meeting between McCain and a group of religious right leaders - Dobson, Perkins, Bauer, etc - and they'll come out and announce that while they do not agree on everything, they know that McCain will be much more to their liking than Hillary or Obama. Translation: we cut a deal. And the deal will be that when there is a Supreme Court opening, McCain picks from their short list.
