Trial begins in body snatcher case

Opening statements were delivered yesterday in the trial of a man accused of trafficking in stolen cadavers.

Deputy District Attorney Marisa Zarate said Ernest Nelson took in close to $1.5 million buying and reselling human body parts that were donated to UCLA's medical school, all the while in cahoots with the school's director of the cadaver program. 

Defense attorney Sean McDonald told jurors his client ran a reputable business and encountered in Henry Reid a corrupt director of a program that was in disarray.

Nelson has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit grand theft, grand theft by embezzlement and tax evasion. If convicted, he faces more than six years in prison.
