Fomenting more CPSIA-style confusion?this time with food safety

By Joe Consumer

ADVERTISEMENTS

We and our consumer group friends know a little about ?internet hysteria,? a term recently used by the reputable FactCheck.org to describe various absurd reactions to a Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) bill aimed at providing much-needed protections for the American food supply.

This crucial (here, here, here) and new legislation (the Food Safety Modernization Act) is now ? surprise, surprise ? the focus of bogus attacks that are burning up the blogosphere with bunk ? this time trying to frighten and confuse everyone from home gardeners to purveyors of farmer?s markets.

Thankfully, Rep. DeLauro is doing what she can to keep a lid on the hysteria, publishing a ?Myth and Fact? sheet on her website.  She has also made public the many organizations that support the legislation, which include groups like the Farmer?s Market Coalition, Consumer Federation of America,  and the Organic Consumers Association.

The question is will this latest round of anti-consumer crazy-making gather any traction?  Realistically, it?s probably too soon to tell?the bill is still making its way through the Congressional committee process.

Still, Michelle Obama didn?t look too concerned as she led Washington D.C. school children in the planting of the White House vegetable garden recently ? so hope springs eternal!
