Bernanke Celebrates the Season

By Gordon Smith, Christine, Hurt, Vic Fleischer, Fred Tung, Lisa Fairfax, David Zaring

ADVERTISEMENTS

In a homage to Passover, Ben Bernanke gave a speech yesterday answering "four questions about the financial crisis."  We'll leave it to Dealbreaker to provide the snark: " And it's not even like you're at Yeshiva. You're at Morehouse College, Bernanke. Morehouse."  It is pretty rare to hear a governor of the Federal Reserve Board give a speech tinged with religious, or indeed any, themes other than bank safety and soundness and macroeconomics.  Which is not to say that this particular talk lacked the old standbys.  The four questions were:

How Did We Get Here?
What Is the Fed Doing to Address the Situation?
Does the Fed's Aggressive Response Risk Inflation Down the Road?
Why Did the Fed and the Treasury Act to Prevent the Bankruptcy of Some Major Financial Firms?

No matter what the season, it is good to hear that the Fed is thinking about inflation.
