Clarence Thomas And the Bill Of Obligations

By Dan Filler

ADVERTISEMENTS

On a day dedicated to the Bill of Rights, Justice Clarence Thomas announced that he is kind of fed up with all this right talk.  From the NY Times:

"Today there is much focus on our rights,? Justice Thomas said. ?Indeed, I think there is a proliferation of rights. I am often surprised by the virtual nobility that seems to be accorded those with grievances.  Shouldn?t there at least be equal time for our Bill of Obligations and our Bill of Responsibilities??

Well, perhaps, but they haven't yet been adopted as part of the Constitution.  (Maybe they've been hovering in the background, a pneumbra driving his interpretation of portions of the extant Bill?)

?This job is easy for people who?ve never done it,? he said later. ?What I have found in this job is they know more about it than I do, especially if they have the title, law professor.?

Touché!
