Malware that has infected more than 12 million computers around the world since October is poised to strike today.  It is designed to lash together the infected computers into a hugely powerful supercomputer.  The aims of its unknown author(s) are also unknown, but could include massive denial of service attacks on chosen websites or blanket spamming.  A global alliance of White Hats has been working to thwart the software.  They are urging computer users to apply their Windows patches and scan their hard drives.  Microsoft, whose OS is targeted, has offered a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the software's author(s).
