Assembly passes extended unemployment benefits

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

The state Assembly on Monday passed a bill to extend unemployment benefits in California, as lawmakers here took the first steps in drawing billions of dollars from the federal stimulus package.

The bill was passed 76-0, and would extend unemployment benefits by 20 weeks. The maximum time Californians can receive benefits is 59 weeks; the bill would extend that to 79 weeks.

Currently, employers pay into an unemployment insurance fund that allows laid-off workers to receive between $40 and $450 per week. The federal stimulus also is providing an extra $25 a week until July 3, 2010.

The state's unemployment rate jumped to 10.5 percent in February.

The bill now moves to the Senate.
