ADVERTISEMENTS

Michelle Obama has attracted a lot of attention, but last week she brought some attention to two imporant matters regarding education.  First, she spent some time in an inner city Washington, D.C. school, talking with students about what it was like to grow up getting good grades and striving to achieve while getting picked on at school.  This may be something many of us scoff at and reminisce about our own school experiences, but Mrs. Obama brings a new level of credibility to talking to urban kids about growing up on the south side of Chicago.

Secondly (and this got a lot more attention), she brought in elementary school children to help cut the sod of the south lawn of the White House for the newest urban garden in D.C.  Not only was this a good photo op, but it provided an opportunity to show some of these elementary students the White House.  They had something to teach the first family, as well, since they’ve had their own school garden since 2001.  In cased you missed the coverage, NBC’s two minute video clip shows how urban students are interacting with the administration.
