China Business Tip: Use Your Time Wisely

By Stan

ADVERTISEMENTS

This seems like an obvious truism, but you would be surprised at how many folks waste time over here, old China expats included.

To be specific, my advice is to not spend several hours playing World of Goo when you should be doing something productive. Sure, it’s a fun game — wait, I mean “physics-based puzzle” — but there are better things to do with one’s time.

Here’s another bit of free advice. When you find yourself wasting lots of time on 2D games like World of Goo, for God’s sake don’t make matters worse by upgrading your PC to play higher-end 3D games.

Whatever you do, don’t install additional RAM (e.g., 2 gigs last week), and definitely do not feed your habit with a decent GPU (e.g., an ATI 4670 512* — not a high-end card, but quite serviceable for casual use).

If you’ve lost your way that far down the slippery slope, at least do not tempt yourself by having cool games lying around the house (e.g. Bioshock, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space).

There is some good news in all this. My horrifically under-powered Dell C521 Slimline at home is probably not up to task, and my new card will probably burn out within days unless I upgrade the PSU, giving me once again lots of time to take care of business.

* FYI: The Asus 4670 was my wife’s recommendation. Yes, she’s a bit of a hardware enthusiast and will be installing the card herself tomorrow after replacing the cheap Asus thermal paste. All of my nerdboy readers are at liberty to be jealous.
