: Legal Pad | LAAmerica's Sheriff says indictment is vague, conviction should be set aside
By Richard Binder
Mike Carona, the former sheriff of Orange County, Calif., who was acquitted on five counts of conspiracy and mail fraud charges earlier this year, has asked a federal judge to set aside a sixth count of witness tampering on which he was convicted, according to recent court documents filed in the case.
Carona, once dubbed "America's Sheriff" by Larry King, was indicted in 2007 on charges that he used his high-profile office to enrich himself, his friends and family. He was convicted on charges that he attempted to influence the grand jury testimony of a local businessman, Don Haidl, who was assistant sheriff under Carona.
He could face up to 20 years in prison.
