: SoapBox Law355th Post for Soapbox Law! (And Some Conservative Clarifications)
ADVERTISEMENTS
This seems like a random number but it holds profound significance: I have now exceeded the number of posts that I had on Joe and I's old stomping grounds SoapBox Politics (354). And on Super Tuesday no less. The karmic forces are churning indeed. This surprises me because I feel like I blog fairly regularly, yet it took me nearly twice as long (three years) to write the same amount of posts that I did in half the time at SBP. Here's to 355 more! Now, once our Republican and Democrat nominees are secure (and I don't believe that they will be after today), I will likely spend a post or two clarifying why I believe that everyone should vote for the Republican candidate over the Democrat candidate no matter who it is. My first goal in doing this is to make clear the differences between the two parties and ideologies. I worry some of my more sensitive Democrat friends will take it as an attack on them or the party as a whole. Clarity is the watch word people. Clarity. Agreement is only the secondary goal. Here are two distinctions emblematic of the differences between Conservatives and Liberals.
1) Liberals will watch this clip and nod their head and say 'Yeah, that's what I want my president (government) doing.' Conservatives, on the other hand will get a little nervous virtually whenever the government decides to 'help' us with something. Conservatives have a natural distrust of the government. We don't want the same people who took six days to get water to the Superdome to be the same person in charge of everyone's health care or finding them a job. Keep your hand out my pocket and the government out of my way.
2) This clip perfectly captures at least one reason (and there are others), why I (and I'm sure many other conservatives) don't get as excited about Barrack Obama. I think most people understand that he's a charismatic person and speech giver (though I don't find him to be a great debater. He has a good quip every now and then, but he takes a long time to say anything and when he does its usually just in platitudes). Even people who endorse Obama can only cite his capacity to unite, but not any actual evidence of having done so in the past. Even though some on the left want us to believe he has ?red state appeal,? if he gets the nomination, once people see his utter lack of accomplishment outside of merely voting for every liberal bill and against every conservative idea, I promise you, this appeal will fade. Liberals haven't vetted him yet because they care less about what he did and more about how he makes them feel. The general electorate will not be so forgiving. Even if Hillary gets the nomination, people will take a close look at her purported accomplishments and find them lacking. Can you imagine if you lived your life that way? Imagine never telling your wife that you love, never take her out to dinner, never do anything for her, and when friends of your wife ask her why she's still married to you she says, ?He has tremendous potential to be a good husband.?
Again, this is not an attack on Democrats or those who support them, merely an explanation of what animates conservatives. As an other example, look at the two remaining viable Republican choices and there accomplishments in comparison: a) Mitt Romney- a governor who turned billions of dollars in liberal state deficit into a $2 billion surplus in only four years without raising taxes, as well as turning around the Olympics and becoming a self made billionaire. b) John McCain- a former POW, and former leader of the largest squadron in the military, 20+ years in the Senate, writing and passing meaningful legislation by reaching across the isle (all of which sucked, but at least he's done something).
In summary, two differences in what animates conservatives as opposed to liberals are 1) not getting excited when the government promises to help us and 2) we place an emphasis on accomplishments over mere potential or promises to do something.
