: Legal Pad | LAACLU and Minutemen join forces in San Diego
By Jason Siegel
The San Diego chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is backing the San Diego Minutemen, the North County Times reports. This, despite the fact, that the Minutemen list the ACLU on their website as one of the "radical illegal alien activist groups" they oppose.
While the two groups are often on opposing sides in disputes over immigration, the ACLU chapter said it may join the Minutemen's battle to regain its permits to pick up trash near a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.
The San Diego Minutemen claim Caltrans' decision to move them from a busy section of Interstate 5 to a more obscure location about denying free speech rights rather than the safety concerns raised by Caltrans.
The ACLU chapter is looking into the validity of the safety concerns - falling within their mission to defend the Constitution and Bill of Rights if Caltrans' decision was a pretext for discrimination.
