staying in bed

ADVERTISEMENTS

I think some of my readers think I've handled the pregnancy/baby thing with slightly creepy confidence and ease. You just don't see me on my bad days.

Friday was a really bad day. Thursday night was terrible - I got very little sleep and Becca kept waking up to eat for only five minutes. I was a mess - sort of a whimpering zombie. Over the course of the night I got warmer and warmer, and kept asking Dan if maybe she wasn't too hot in her footie PJs and fleece swaddle blanket, until I realized that it was me. By morning I was down to my underwear and sweating a little, on the verge of sick. Lovely. I had maybe a degree of fever, and just generally felt like shit. Two and a half weeks of sleep deprivation will get you in the end.

I did exactly ONE productive thing Friday, which was to give the baby a bath (man, she's good!), and essentially spent the whole day on the couch, dozing, feeding the baby when she needed it, and staring into space. Got chills in the afternoon, but got better after that. No school work, no cleaning, just couch. I needed it. Doing better now. This newborn gig is brutal.

Friday was the last day of Dan's paid leave, too. Wahhh. He could take vacation days, which he's saved up, but we're going to march forward and use them only if necessary (like my next zombie episode.)

Sleepin_in_2 Sometimes by the last feeding of the night/morning, I'm too tired to sit up and put on my pillow, so she nurses side-lying in bed with me, and then she sometimes sleeps with me in bed for an hour or two. Don't call the SIDS police; I've read the literature and she's plenty safe, plus I'm not sleeping heavily enough to ignore something going wrong. It's sweet to nuzzle against the top of her head, and she seems to be calmed by me being near even if I'm not right next to her. Dan took a picture when we did it Thursday as he went to work.

And a little Sunday relaxing in bed never hurt anyone.
