New Program to Assess Returning Troops for Traumatic Brain Injuries and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

By Michael Kaplen

ADVERTISEMENTS

The State of Montana has developed a new model for assessing its returning troops for brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder.

Recognizing that many problems associated with traumatic brain injuries and stress do not become apparent for several months after returning home, the program calls for the mandatory evaluation of all troops after they have been home for six months.  By conducting this later assessment conditions associated with these disorders such as sleep disturbances, memory and concentration difficulties, excess alcohol use, family problems and emotional issues may become more apparent.

Since the evaluation of all veterans is mandatory, individuals who are not willing to admit to their difficulties may be more easily identified with needed treatment instituted.
