danah boyd?s thesis

By Greg Lastowka

ADVERTISEMENTS

If you do any significant internet-related research, chances are you know who danah boyd is.  If not, there’s a Wikipedia page with a run-down of relevant details and links.  What I did not know until just now is that her PhD thesis on teens and social software is posted online.  You can find a link to it here, after the discussion of the difficulties of filing your dissertation with a CC license.

It looks like very interesting work.

More generally, I agree with her post that having your thesis available online for public access (under a CC license or not) can be a great contribution to scholarship.  I have learned quite a bit from reading theses over the years.  They can be especially helpful for folks outside a discipline, given that a thesis is a formal performance that entails recitation of key ideas in a discipline as well as novel contributions to the field.
