Groups Promote Diversity For Federal Bench

ADVERTISEMENTS

Few Asian Americans serve on the federal bench and the new administration should keep that in mind when it starts nominating federal judges, some Asian American legal groups say. CQ Politics’ Legal Beat blog reports that there hasn’t been “a single active Asian American judge for five years,” and that only eight district court judges are Asian American. Karen Narasaki, president of the Asian American Justice Center, told Legal Beat that, “It is very important to make sure that the federal judiciary reflects the communities that it serves and that it has the perspectives of Asian Americans.”

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Legal Beat reports, has pointed to several potential candidates for openings on the federal appeals court circuit. One of the potential candidates mentioned is Goodwin Liu, Associate Dean and Professor of Law at UC Berkeley (above). Liu is also chair of the ACS Board of Directors.
