HIE, SaaS and Low-Cost, Nationwide Adoption of EHRs « Chilmark Research. This post highlights why SaaS is the preferred architecture for small primary care providers that will soon be "incented" to make the move to electronic health records.

Given the architectural complexity of the move, and not to mention the privacy implications, any attempt to use a legacy architecture will quickly prove overwhelming and costly. I will state flat out, if a provider has not yet made the move (and most haven't), it is sheer lunacy not to take a hard look at a SaaS solution.

Post due diligence, it would require a kind of technology "madness" to choose a legacy approach (read client server). I have yet to see anyone make a credible argument that legacy is even a reasonable option.
