Peanut-borne salmonella is the subject of outrage in Congress

By Edward Bills

ADVERTISEMENTS

Relatives of victims of the outbreak that has killed nine call for better safeguards while the officials of Peanut Corp. of America take the 5th when asked why tainted products were released.

Refusing to answer questions on the grounds of ’self-incrimination’ (taking the 5th) was wise for there will be plenty of law suits and criminal charges brought in this sad case.

Still, once again, the government (the Food and Drug Administration) gets off without a scratch.

The failure of our “Government” to do what it is charged with doing (protecting the citizens) is much like the government telling banks that they must make loans to individuals without proper underwriting and then complaining about the lack of underwriting when the loans went bad.

What the Peanut Corp. of America did in knowingly selling products contaminated with deadly bacteria was very wrong and those responsible should be punished and made to pay.
