Stay Issued in Alabama Execution

As anticipated, the U.S. Supreme Court stayed tonight's scheduled Alabama execution.  As I mentioned in this earlier post, the scene bore some similarity to a scheduled execution in December.  The Supreme Court's stay in that case seemed a clear signal that no lethal injection executions would occur while Baze is pending. SCOTUS Blog has, "Callahan Execution Stayed." The Supreme Court has just issued an order staying the execution in the case of James Callahan, which we wrote about earlier here. No dissents were recorded. AP has, "Ala. Inmate Wins Stay of Execution." A murderer who would have become the nation's first executed inmate in months won a reprieve Thursday from the U.S. Supreme Court a little more than an hour before he was scheduled to die by lethal injection...continue to full post
