Kellogg Peanut Butter Crackers Recalled After Salmonella Found

By Greg Webb

ADVERTISEMENTS

Kellogg is recalling the product Austin Quality Foods Toasty Crackers with Peanut Butter after a package tested positive for salmonella. The crackers are the first product sold to consumers found with salmonella; initially salmonella was linked only to products sold to institutions, such as nursing homes.

Peanut Corporation of America, based in Lynchburg, Va., recently recalled peanut butter and peanut paste, an ingredient used by food manufacturers, because of a suspected salmonella outbreak. More than 470 people have been sickened by the outbreak, and six deaths may also be related, according to the Center for Disease Control. The CDC believes there are dozens more unreported illnesses.

PCA supplied 32 companies with the recalled products. About a dozen of those companies have pulled products from store shelves, including cookies, ice cream, and crackers. The products were sold in stores such as Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Wegmans, and Kroger. More recalls are expected.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)says peanut butter sold in stores is safe, but advises consumers not to eat other products with peanut butter or paste until they are cleared.

Companies not affected by the recall include Mars, Hershey, the Girl Scouts and ConAgra Foods.
