Obama Needs Edwards's Endorsement

By wt

ADVERTISEMENTS
JS predicts an Edwards endorsement of Obama by Saturday. A very gutsy call, but one that I can't argue with.

The problem for Obama is that he NEEDS the Edwards endorsement. Early indications from Gallup's latest survey indicate that neither candidate is disproportionately benefiting from the Edwards dropout.

Why?

Well, naturally, Obama gets a lot of Edwards's far-left support because he's frequently criticized Clinton as the candidate of the status quo.

But why is Hillary taking half of the Edwards vote then?

Because not all of Edwards's supporters thought of change as their most important issue.

First, Edwards was splitting the white vote with Hillary, as we saw in South Carolina. Second, Edwards also had a fair amount of women in his camp, (my mother included) who are now Hillary's prime demographic target -- middle-aged women (no offense mom).

But an even split of Edwards's voters won't help Obama. What he needs, I think, is the solid endorsement, to telegraph to the one-time Edwards voters that Obama is carrying his mantle forward.

For Obama's sake, then, he better hope JS is right.
