Jury Returns $2.5 Million Malpractice Verdict

By Steven M. Levin and John J. Perconti

ADVERTISEMENTS

A district county returned a $2.5 million verdict for wrongful death of a 27 year-old patient. The jury returned the verdict in a medical malpractice lawsuit involving a missed cancer diagnosis of a 24-yearo-old female patient. The patient continued to go to her doctor complaining of blood in her stools and pain. After 7 months of continued visits complaining of the rectal bleeding and pain she was rushed to the hospital where it was realized that the woman actually had colon and rectal cancer. The woman was diagnosed with aggressive colon and rectal cancer. She died of advanced cancer in 2007. The family has sued the doctor and his nurse claiming medical negligence for not properly examining the woman, discounting her symptoms and missing her cancer diagnosis.
