Busiest Week Yet.

By Steve Pirates

ADVERTISEMENTS

It’s Hump Day of the busiest week of law school yet. In addition to my regularly scheduled classes I have a mock interview and am in the middle of a Moot Court competition. Here’s my calendar for the week, with commentary on how it has gone so far.

Monday - 1L Opening/Closing competition round 1. 8 minute presentation, either opening or closing, for the defense of prosecution of a criminal fact pattern. I chose to do a defense close. The judges were really helpful with the commentary. Some of it was a little tough, because no one likes to be told that they aren’t an amazing speaker, but still, it was good to learn what to do to improve. I was there with my friends Abe, Brian and Christine. It is kind of sad that the nature of what we do forces us to compete against our friends.

Tuesday - 1L Opening/Closing competition round 2. same as above, with improvements made based on the critiques offered by the judges. Everyone had to compete both nights. It was nice to know that we had a second chance to make up for a less than stellar first round. The pressure was definitely on to step up the intensity, and to be as mistake free as possible, without seeming robotic. I think I was more nervous the second night than the first night. I had done well enough the first night that I figured I had a chance to make finals if I did just a little better on night two.

Wednesday - First Legal Skills II assignment due. Just an eight page research report, nothing too fancy. 1L Finalists announced. Somehow I squeaked in. I see a few familiar names on the Finalists list. I will definitely have to step it up quite a few notches to win an award. I am getting tired of giving the same speech over and over again. Mock Interview scheduled for 6:30. I have to be there at 6:00. I’m afraid that I will accidentally go into my “close” halfway through the interview.

Thursday - Complaint Drafting assignment due in Civ Pro II. 1L Competition finals that evening.

Friday - Die of exhaustion.
