A mixed verdict for 'America's Sheriff'

By Jonathan Hayter

ADVERTISEMENTS

A federal jury on Friday acquitted former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona of conspiracy and mail fraud charges in a case alleging that he illegally used his office to enrich himself and his friends and family.

Carona, once dubbed "America's Sheriff" by Larry King, was indicted in 2007.

The jury, which began sitting for the trial on Oct. 20 in Santa Ana, Calif., found Carona not guilty of one count of conspiracy, three counts of mail fraud and one count of witness tampering. However, Carona was found guilty of a second count of witness tampering tied to recorded audiotapes in which he attempted to influence the grand jury testimony of a local businessman, Don Haidl, who served as assistant sheriff under Carona.

Carona's sentencing date will be determined at a Jan. 21 hearing, as will further proceedings against Carona's wife, Deborah, and his former mistress, Deborah Hoffman, a lawyer, who await separate trials on related charges.
