Eric Foner On Understanding Lincoln, Reconstruction Era

ADVERTISEMENTS

In an exclusive interview with ACS, renowned historian Eric Foner explores President Abraham Lincoln’s thinking on the future of black Americans at the end of the Civil War. Foner, the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, also says that many of today’s judges need to learn or re-learn the history of the Reconstruction era, which included ratification of the constitutional amendments, intended to extend liberties and equality. Foner’s interview was conducted following a Jan. 14 event at the National Press Club called “The Road from Lincoln to Obama: The Constitution and the New Birth of Freedom.” The event was hosted by ACS, NAACP LDF, MALDEF and the Constitutional Accountability Center.
