Grab the kids' school lunches. The salmonella outbreak that has expanded to 43 states sickening up to 434 individual has turned a new corner.
As a precaution, Kellogg, the cereal giant, is asking stores to pull its Keebler and Austin brand peanut butter crackers from shelves.
"Consumer health and safety is our top priority," said David Mackay, president and CEO, in a statement on the company Web site. "We are taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of caution."
"While no additional consumer action is necessary at this time, consumers with questions or who would like a product refund can call the Kellogg Consumer Response Center at 888-314-2060."
Kellogg of Battle Creek, Michigan says it has not received any complaints or discovered any problems but it does use peanut paste from Peanut Corp. of America which has recalled its peanut butter.
Peanut Corp. of America has issued a recall for 21 lots of its Parnell's Pride and King Nut peanut butters for possible salmonella contamination. The product was made at their plant in Blakely, Georgia on or after July 1.
Consumers are advised not to consumer peanut butter crackers that go by the name Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers.
Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) death toll expanded to five on Wednesday.
The latest deaths Wednesday were reported in Minnesota and Idaho. The exact cause of death is not determined but all five adults had salmonella infections when they died.
Minnesota health officials positively linked the strain of salmonella Salmonella Typhimurium from a five pound open tub found in a nursing home to the nationwide strain, though the wholesale peanut butter is only distributed to seven states.
The source for nationwide outbreak has not been determined. #
