Suppressed Memory Resurfaces: My Willie Didn?t Do Nothin!

I recently watched this NFL commercial featuring Long Beach Poly alum and NFL superstar Willie McGinest. I?ve met Willie once; he came to my CIF championship game in 1997. Willie was a great basketball player in high school who also happened to win a CIF championship while playing for coach Ron Palmer. That was a good memory that I?ve never lost. In the commercial, Willie thanks his mom for encouraging him when he was young. When I was watching this commercial, particularly the part where he is talking to his mom on the phone, a repressed memory suddenly floated to the surface.
When I was 18, I worked in the Lakewood mall at a sports clothing/hat/memorabilia store called Fanzz. Willie McGinest?s mom regularly visited the mall and my store in particular. One day as I chatted with her, I mentioned that the Patriots would have a good year that year if ?they could keep their players out of jail.? This was in reference to several recent news stories of a few Patriots players accused of sexual assault. What I didn?t know was that Willie was one of the players who had been accused. Her mouth dropped while yelled, ?My Willie didn?t do nothin!?
While I attempted to take my foot out of my mouth, she stormed out of the store never to return again.
Good times.
