Mitt Romney Hodgepodge

ADVERTISEMENTS
As an unabashed Romney supporter, I?ve been following his campaign and the election in general very closely and feel compelled to share a few interesting things I?ve read recently. Just feel lucky that I?ve stopped myself from making daily blog entries about the campaign:

- Here is a copy of a 1994 Romney campaign flyer when Mitt was running against Ted Kennedy. I think this flyer belies the notion that Mitt was some crazy liberal in Massachusetts and only recently became conservative. All of his positions, except for abortion (listen to Mitt explain why he changed his abortion position here) are right down the party line; tough on crime, low taxes and less government.

- There was an interesting exchange today between Mitt and Mike Huckabee, who is running behind Mitt in Iowa. Huckabee, who favors giving tuition breaks to illegal aliens, took a shot at an old story that illegal immigrants had once worked on Romney?s house in Massachusetts. Romney had a strong response: ?Well, you know, this is not a laughing matter. Illegal immigration is not a joke, it's something serious. And the seriousness of this is very plain to see, which is in the case of Mike Huckabee, he believes that illegal aliens ought to get a tuition break. He fought for that in his state schools. I had a bill like that put on my desk. I said, 'No.' I said, 'It's simply not fair for the children of illegal aliens to get a special discount on their tuition when U.S. citizens from all the other states would have to pay a higher rate.' It doesn't make sense for the children of citizens to pay a higher rate than the children of illegal aliens.?

- Someone (Joe?) did in fact give me this sexy Mitt Romney shirt for my birthday. The note in the package only said Happy Birthday, so I?m only guessing. Mystery gift giver; reveal yourself!

- Polls: Romney?s game plan to secure the nomination is to spend as much time and money in order to sell himself to the early primary/caucus state voters and use that early momentum to propel himself to the nomination. Romney has traditionally done poorly in national polls because national polls at this point are essentially name recognition polls, and Romney has far less name recognition then Rudy, McCain and Thompson. However, in the early state polls, he is killing the competition. For example, Romney has strong leads in the first two states; Iowa and especially New Hampshire and running a close second in South Carolina. This early success has not translated into national polling popularity as Mitt has always run a distant third and sometimes fourth in the ?name recognition? national polls. However, this recent ARG poll has Mitt only 4% points behind Rudy in the national polls! While this poll maybe an aberration, even other polls that usually have Mitt in 3rd or 4th now have Romney tied for second nationally.

- Here is an interesting article on Mitt?s time as a missionary in France. I think much, if not most, of the talk about Mitt's religion (which happens to be mine as well) has been pretty disgusting from both the right and left. However, I think knowing what Mitt did on his mission (as opposed to what his theology is) is important to understanding the man himself.
