Agree to Disagree

ADVERTISEMENTS

I met a health law attorney.  Not surprisingly, we ended up talking about health care.  We disagreed on every single point.

After talking for forty minutes, it became painfully clear that we would never agree on any of the issues. I began to wonder if I knew too little to be arguing with an experienced litigator. Unfortunately, I know too little statistics to counter. I held my ground and di not back off the points I have made. Instead, I added a few words like “a valid point” from time to time.

What would have been the best way to handle a situation like this? My gut feeling tells me this was more of an ideological debate, that I should not readily concede just because someone is experienced in one area. Perhaps it is possible that the litigation experience of the attorney is both a reflection of that person’s ideology and a blind spot to the inefficiencies of that system. Oh foolish pride…

The litigator did point out several interesting points that I have never considered before.
