Republicans take note. This is a super long article but describes the unique circumstances it took for a Democrat to win in 2008.
Unlike Roosevelt, Obama will only get two terms. There will be no chance for him to become the father of an entire generation of voters. Obama's great strengths, immense youth and black support, are not the assured inheritance of his successor. But his weaknesses just may be.

In sum, Obama was the perfect candidate, and the financial crisis was the perfect shifting event to put a Democrat in the White House.
