divLast year, I wrote: quot;Being in LA has caused me to see a lot more movies and a lot less theater.quot; That has remained true, although at least I#39;ve scaled the movie number back to where it was before coming out here. #0160;In 2006, I saw 22 movies. #0160;Last year, I saw 33. #0160;This year, it#39;s back to 22. #0160;And 4 of them weren#39;t in a theater, so maybe they shouldn#39;t even count. #0160;(I#39;ll also note that 8 additional were free screenings, either through the Writers Guild or some other random screening I found somewhere, so I only *paid* to see 10 movies this year, which doesn#39;t seem like a particularly excessive number.) I#39;ve tried really hard this year -- I try hard every year, but after seeing 33 movies last year, I made an extra-special effort -- to avoid seeing movies I didn#39;t absolutely expect to really enjoy. #0160;I didn#39;t succeed in every case: I was wrong about Gonzo (the Hunter Thompson documentary) after seeing the trailer, and didn#39;t like the movie at all. #0160;I was wrong to even bother watching Baby Mama on DVD. #0160;I was wrong to bother with a free screening of the Harold and Kumar sequel. #0160;And I will ask for a pardon as far as my choices to see Sex and the City and Definitely, Maybe, because I didn#39;t pick them. #0160;At all. #0160;But aside from those, I think I did a pretty good choosing what to see, and I did enjoy most of what I saw. #0160;Although the highlights, I would say, were less high than previous years -- I didn#39;t *love* too many of the movies I saw this year, and a lot more fell into the quot;likedquot; category than anything else./divbr /divBroken up into 4 chunks below -- roughly: loved, liked, didn#39;t like, very much didn#39;t like./divbr /div1. The Visitor/divdiv2. Frost/Nixon/divdiv3. Slumdog Millionaire/divbr /div4. Away from Her/divdiv5. The Great Debaters/divdiv6. Tropic Thunder/divdiv7. Charlie Wilson#39;s War/divdiv8. Role Modelsbr //divdiv9. Milk/divdiv10. Then She Found Me/divdiv11. You Don#39;t Mess With The Zohan/divdiv12. Forgetting Sarah Marshall/divdiv13. Pete Seeger: The Power of Song/divdiv14. 21/divdiv15. Leatherheads/divbr /div16. Bee Movie/divdiv17. Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay/divdiv18. Definitely, Maybe/divdiv19. Baby Mama/divbr /div20. Sex and the City/divdiv21. Gonzo/divdiv22. The Bucket List/divbr /br /divAnswering some anticipated possible comments:/divbr /divquot;Milk is going to win Best Picture. #0160;Why#39;d you only rank it 9th?quot;/divbr /divI liked Milk, but to me it felt like a very standard bio-pic, nothing special. #0160;It was a bit paint-by-numbers, you knew how the movie wanted you to feel about the characters, and it checked all the boxes to provoke those feelings. #0160;I think I learned just as much about Harvey Milk from his Wikipedia entry, and while Sean Penn#39;s performance was fine, even as bio-pics go I don#39;t think it was a standout film. #0160;Don Cheadle and last year#39;s Talk To Me was a more enjoyable, more interesting movie, about a notable person I didn#39;t know much about going into the film. #0160;Not that it#39;s a bad movie -- like I said, I liked it -- but I find it hard to get too excited about it./divbr /divquot;Role Models? #0160;8th? #0160;Really?quot;/divbr /divYeah. #0160;It wasn#39;t amazing, but there were a lot of funny moments, it delivered on the premise, I liked it./divbr /divquot;Zohan? #0160;Higher than Sarah Marshall? #0160;Are you insane?quot;/divbr /divThe hummus jokes were funny. #0160;Sarah Marshall got a little dull in the middle. #0160;For what it was, I thought Zohan was really solid./divbr /divquot;I never heard of The Visitor. #0160;What the heck?quot;/divbr /divIt#39;s a character piece -- a depressed college professor who returns to his long-abandoned New York apartment to find that two illegal immigrants are living there. #0160;He befriends them and typical movie plot unfolds. #0160;It#39;s well done. #0160;Far better than I anticipated./div
