: ACS BlogCongress To Urge NSA To Investigate Wiretapping Of Convicted Scholar
A U.S. House of Representatives oversight panel is set to urge the inspector general of the National Security Agency to launch an investigation into its domestic spying activities, The New York Times reported. Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.), who chairs the Select Intelligence Oversight Panel, told the newspaper that he planned to ask the NSA’s inspector general to look into whether the agency illegally spied on a Muslim scholar in Northern Virginia and concealed its action during a trial of the scholar. Holt said there is evidence that the Bush administration attempted to interfere with the scholar’s right to a fair trial by hiding the agency’s spying activities from the court. The scholar, Ali al-Timimi, was convicted on terrorism charges in 2005.
