TOC Fever

By Andrea

ADVERTISEMENTS

We are definitely getting Tournament of Champions fever over here. (Unfortunately, I am also knee deep in the asylum case I mentioned before and it kind of wipes me out such that I forget to blog.) Personally, I have it so bad that before writing this post I thought about how much I want to detail Dan's studying regime in case SPIES FROM THE OTHER SIDE(s) read my blog. First of all, it's slightly uncool to study for Jeopardy - you're supposed to say you just know all the stuff, even though that is a total lie. Second, DON'T COPY HIM, SPIES!

This is almost certainly paranoia, mostly because the contestant-and-sideline coach duo most likely to be spying on anyone is...us. We are unmedicated Jeoparweirdos. Do we know exactly who is likely to be in the TOC with Dan? Check. Have we watched their games and brutally criticized their wagering? Check! Do we use Google Maps to look at pictures of their houses? Uh, no, not that one. But we still have six weeks to go! Look behind you, Pastor Dave!

So yeah, I've been helping Dan brush up on a few artists and actors and various miscellany. (Or should I say, HODGEPODGE and POTPOURRI.) We discovered sporcle.com, which is really addictive.

Today this guy Ben, who is really good, won his third game, putting himself on TOC Watch. (Four-timers are probably going to the dance.) I knew I was losing it in Final Jeopardy when they revealed that Ben, who had been leading going into FJ, bet ALL his money, which is straight up crazy, and I cackled with glee because it meant HE HAS A WEAKNESS! Hee hee hee!

I hope the craziness is a little understandable. One out of 15 people is going to win $250,000. Why not Dan? It seems perfectly reasonable, if hardly something to bet on. We both remember all the single-elimination debate tournaments we were in in college, and the times you'd look at your octofinals matchup and the rest of the field and go, I could take this. And then if you were me, you'd flame out in quarters, but, uh, where was I going with this? Oh yeah, trivia Terminator Larissa could go down to the college champ in the first round and that cute guy named Erik could stay up too late playing baccarat and there could be a run of categories like DON MATTINGLY FUN FACTS and WHO SAID IT: SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, OR FUTURAMA? and FINISH THE 'LES MIS' LYRIC and the next thing you know, Dan's a quarter millionaire.

Or we could go home with $5000 and some good stories. That is, statistically, a lot more likely.

Then again, you thought Dan was going to lose that very first game, didn't you? I think we'd better buy some more blank notecards.
