Harbor Commission makes Wise choice for empty seat

Attorney Susan Wise was unanimously approved yesterday to fill a vacant seat on the Long Beach Harbor Commission.  She joins a five-member governing panel that helps oversee the nation's second-largest seaport and a major source of air pollution in Southern California.

Mayor Bob Foster picked Wise for the job in November. He asserts that the board's sole female member remains committed to the port's Clean Air Action Plan, which seeks to slash emissions from trucks, ships, on-dock equipment and locomotives in half by 2012.

Before the vote, several councilmembers questioned Wise regarding her attorney husband Erich's role in several lawsuits representing the shipping industry against environmental groups and city agencies, including a landmark 2002 case that led to dramatic changes in port industry's practices in Southern California.  Read about it here.
