As a pre-baby Christmas present, CT got us a full set of Childcraft books. My brother and I loved these books as kids. When I was pregnant I went looking for our 1970s set, but my unsentimental mother had thrown ours out without telling us. I was thrilled to get the books for K's shelf. I thought he might start enjoying them when he was four or five.

Recently I pulled Volume 7, "How Things Work," off the shelf to see if it had a picture of a tuba. Lo and behold, it featured an entire section on musical instruments. I left the book out, and K has since learned about popcorn, doorknobs, and today, lightbulbs. The discovery of lightbulbs totally rocked his world. For the rest of the morning he went around pointing at all the lights, saying, "Li-bo! Li-bo!" and demanding to be lifted up to see under the lampshades.

Later, while JW and I were getting ready, we heard him banging around in his room. Each time I peeked in to check on him, I saw him busily trying to pull some hangers out of his closet. Eventually he came out holding a hanger in each hand. "Horn," he announced. He blew into one and made a low-pitched sound. Then he held up the other one. "Horn," he said. He blew into that one and made a high-pitched sound. Then he kept laughing and running around with his horns, blowing into each one of them and making the noises.
