Invited to the Dance

Yesterday Dan officially got the call from the Jeopardy! powers that be: He's going to the Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas in January. Prize just for showing up and not being too drunk to get on air: $5000. Prize for beating out 14 other brainiacs: $250,000. YEAH. You better believe someone's making a bunch of flashcards on Explorers That Got Killed and Bald Popes and Crazy German Operas About Knights.

Too bad this week and next are the Teen Tournament, which we're not really into. I mean, I enjoy seeing happy, nerdy kids who are all like I was, probably on their middle school mock trial teams and so square they think rebelling is not doing their math homework and getting a B instead of an A. But there's only so much "Who is Rihanna?" I can take before I start missing the harder stuff. At least it's not the Celebrity shows. (Shudder.)

Also, they have crazy ringers this year, including a kid who won the Scripps National Spelling Bee and a kid who's been in the finals of the National Geography Bee twice. Duh, they both won their quarterfinal matches handily. Where's the fun in that? It's like when they had Ken Jennings on Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? and he won $500,000. Was there some mystery about whether Ken is smarter than elementary school children?

As this post indicates, I'm going to start blogging about Jeopardy! more often through the TOC taping, so...rejoice! Or, sorry.
