Death Penalty: An Expensive Joke

Bob Ingle BlogStudy after study shows the only punishment that works as a deterrent is the punishment that is swift and sure. The death penalty in New Jersey is neither swift nor sure and therefore is worthless. (In those states where the death penalty is used it doesn't seem to have an effect on the crime rate.) A life sentence without possibility of parole is not more expensive when you factor in the endless automatic appeals that are paid for by taxpayers. There also is the matter of a death sentence carried out is irreversible in cases where some future technology determines innocence as has been the case with DNA.
