Books to Watch For

ADVERTISEMENTS

Well, the spring 2009 catalogs have begun to arrive from university presses.  I'm eagerly awaiting the Harvard University Press catalog, because it has a listing for a very exciting book of essays on legal history.  No sign of it yet.  However, the UNC catalog has some great books that I'll be on the lookout for in the spring.  Joan Waugh and Gary Gallagher's Wars within a War: Controversy and Conflict Over the American Civil War, Duane Blue Spruce and Tanya Thrasher's The Land Has Memory: Indigenous Knowledge, Native Landscapes, and the National Museum of the American Indian, Amy Louise Wood's Lynching and Spectacle: Witnessing Racial Violence in America, 1890-1940, and most especially Laura Edwards' The People and Their Peace: Legal Culture and the Transformation of Inequality in the Post-Revolutionary South all look terrific.  John Majewski's Modernizing a Slave Economy: The Economic Vision of the Confederate Nation relates to some work I'm doing on antebellum economic thought in the judiciary, so I'm really looking forward to learning from it.
