: Random Ramblings About Life and Law SchoolJeanne Shaheen: a "glass ceiling shatterer"
"Traditionally, it was believed that women were essentially different in character from men...Women were homemakers. They nourished their families and kept them safe from the cruel world...In an article written for Freedom's Sentinel, the characteristics of the feminine mind were described as tenderness and simplicity...Women expressed disappointment if they were not able to serve their husbands as mental, as well as physical, companions. 'For if the character of women were thoroughly understood, they would be found too good to be hated and yet not good enough to be idolized.'
"Hostility toward women's education was thwarted by convincing men that an educated wife could only be an asset to him."
Now think about the role of women today, and how far we've come. Yet in all this time, NH has never elected a woman to the US Senate. Until now. Jeanne Shaheen is the first woman NH has ever elected to the Senate. She was the first female governor of the state, and now she's achieved another first, earning herself the title of "glass ceiling shatterer" according to a journalist on WMUR.com. Somehow it's pretty cool and pretty sad at the same time... but I'll stick with pretty cool.
